Retirement in Pattaya
Forget what you heard about Pattaya. Actually, it’s all true, but it is far from being the full story.
Without any doubt, Pattaya is the best place in the world for a single man who likes the ladies to spend his retirement.
While the sedate resort of Hua Hin was discovered by Thailand’s royal family, Pattaya’s founding fathers were GIs during the Vietnam War. Their imprint can still be traced in the town’s lively nightlife, which ranges from friendly local pubs to jaw-droppingly raunchy nightclubs.
But what fewer people know is that Pattaya can also be an unbeatable retirement destination for anyone in search of outstanding value, a host of leisure opportunities and a service culture that is exceptionally welcoming even by Thailand’s high standards.
One of the very few things Pattaya has in common with Hua Hin is a host of fantastic golf courses. There are at least 20 clubs within a short drive from Pattaya, which also offers excellent bowling, yachting and seaside activities.
A major attraction for Pattaya’s retired expats is the strong sense of community in neighbourhoods like the shores of Mapbrachan Lake. In particular, the outskirts of the town attract many retirees, who appreciate the combination of rural calm with easy access to city attractions.
Retirees who appreciate country life can find high-quality homes at a significant discount to real estate in other Thai destinations such as Phuket. For instance, The Vineyard pool-villa project near Lake Mapbrachan provides Bali-style single-storey villas with attractive roof terraces and lush tropical gardens.
Town-centre options include condos in urban areas close to Pattaya’s notorious Walking Street – a pedestrianised road packed with eyebrow-raising nightclubs. The Hyde Park building, for instance, offers an attractive lifestyle with great views and a roof-top swimming pool on Partumnak Hill, the landmark that divides Pattaya from its sister resort of Jomtien.
While Pattaya’s beaches cannot compete with Phuket’s, for instance, the town has ample sand and plenty of seaside activities, especially if you make the 10-minute drive to Jomtien.
Above all, perhaps, Pattaya is one of Thailand’s friendliest towns. The year-round holiday atmosphere makes for a relaxed and extremely sociable retirement, sharing good times with great company.
Why pick Pattaya?
Pattaya is a booming resort just 75 minutes from Bangkok International Airport. Well-known for its entertainment venues, Pattaya is perfect for retirees looking for a vibrant seaside city, with plenty of attractions including golf, beaches, shopping and dining venues.
“Pattaya has an incredible atmosphere and in the last few years, we’ve also seen demand become more sophisticated. New concepts have appeared which suit not only single retirees, but also couples and families.”
